The novel Just Listenby Sarah Dessen would appeal to adolescents because it acknowledges that teens have real and painful problems to deal with. The Greene family may look perfect from the outside, but there's a lot going on under the surface. Annabel has her own issues (which she doesn't want to tell anyone), Whitney is in treatment for an eating disorder, and the entire family is dealing with the fear that Mrs. Greene will become depressed again. The novel is written through the eyes of the main character, Annabel, who realizes that people are there to help you along the way. She goes through a tough time having to try and open up to her friends and family so they can help her get over her fears and past. This book is appealing to adolescents because it is something that most teens can relate to and can relate to the struggles of Annabel.

HannaGrace - Thanks for your insight into the appeal of Dessen's Just Listen. Do you agree that Sarah Dessen does an outstanding job of portraying teens in a realistic, insightful way? I think she is one of the very best YA authors out there right now because she just gets adolescents. I have read many of her titles, and this and The Truth About Forever are my most favorite. The characters are so real and relatable; I see many of my students in them, to be honest! That is what makes Dessen so good, for sure!
