This novel, The Secret Life of Bees ,appeals to an adolescent audience because it shows what might go on at home, that we don’t know what kind of stuff the family has going on and to basically not judge a book by it’s cover. Like in the novel, Lily her mother are poor. They do not have a lot of money but they are doing all they can to help fit in. Yet the people at her school still make fun of her clothes and how she acts. It appeals to an adolescent audience because bullying is a big issue in the 21st century, and we need to understand that not everybody is the same in wealth or power, but we are equal and all the same at heart. Also, it talks about some of how the time was back when there were different names for the cities, so it is basically a little history lesson. This book is actually very good for kids my age, or above.

This novel The Secret Life of Bees would definitely appeal to adolescent audiences because Lilly is a teenager, these readers see her imperfections, and she has a rebellious side. T. Ray makes her work an unbearable job selling peaches, curses at her, and makes her kneel in grits as punishment. Lilly refuses to see T. Ray as her father because of these actions, as any other teen might. Lilly is rebellious, in the book she runs away because she gets so fed up with T.Ray. She comes across a house of beekeepers, and asks to stay there. Another reason the book is appealing to teen audiences is because we see Lilly's imperfections. Often when people see others mistakes, they realize that they aren’t as different than others. She is always getting in trouble and talking back. She refuses to believe her mother and argues with T.Ray.
